TOMOS ST BULLET

Here is my latest toy. It is the 2009 Tomos ST Bullet. I had sold my old 1986 Honda Aero 50 last year and decided I wanted something with bigger wheels and looking a bit more like a small motorcycle. I received it June 25th, 2009. I also had the front and rear sprockets changed for a higher top end speed. With the stock sprockets top speed would be 30 mph (50 km/h). With the new sprockets I should be able to reach 38 mph (60 km/h). The engine is a 2-stroke 49 cc with auto lube for mixing the oil and gas. Mind you I have also had warnings that the oil injection pump can fail. The moped has a 2 speed automatic transmission. It is strange compared to my scooter. On all scooters they are belt driven and there is a speed variater which changes the gear ratio. On the moped it is chain driven. I like that because you have the option of changing the gear ratio. The break-in period I think is long. For the first 300 miles (480 Km) you are recommended not to go more than 1/3 open throttle and easy take off from stand still and not riding at constant speeds for more than 10 minutes at a time. From 300 (480 km) miles to 500 miles (800 km) you can go half open throttle and vary your speed but not running at top speed, but occasionally go up to higher speeds.

Experience and Problems

Well, from the day I brought this home, the breakin period was quite long. From 0 km - 800 km the engine ran rough. Shifting was uneven and many bolts and nuts had to be checked from getting loose. Once I got over 800 km, the moped got a lot smoother. The handling is like a small motorcycle. It is very quiet and I can cruise at 55 km/h.  The trunk came in handy to store my helmet or for carring stuff. It is also easy on your pocket book. I put about 100 - 150 km per week and it would cost me $2.00 - $2.50 depending on the price of gas. Easy to park and a lot of people give me the thumbs up. It is a really good looking bike. With the larger wheels, I could go on poor roads without dodging all the pot holes like my old Honda scooter with the small wheels. If your looking for something simple and fun to ride, I recommend getting one.
